On 15 May 2009, the City of Nuremberg's Committee for Cultural Issues unanimously decided to commission the nuremberg municipal museums to buy and take over the Deutsches Spielearchiv Marburg (German Games Archive in Marburg).
A year later, this task has been completed, not least thanks to the committed assistance and generous financial support of various partners in the business world and civil society - in particular the Zukunftsstiftung der Sparkasse Nürnberg, the Spielwarenmesse eG and the association "Spiel des Jahres e.V."
The Deutsche Spielearchiv (German Games Archive) is now called Deutsches Spielearchiv Nürnberg (German Games Archive in Nuremberg). It will continue as a municipal institution, under the umbrella of the nuremberg municipal museums.
Nuremberg, a city with a 600 year-old toy tradition and the location of the International Toy Fair since 1950, is the ideal place for this institution and collection which is unique in the European sphere. With the German Games Archive in Nuremberg, nuremberg municipal museums now own a scientifically processed resource comprising more than 30,000 games, a specialist library with about 7,000 volumes as well as the estates of famous games authors, such as Alex Randolph and Peter Pallat. It is Europe's largest collection of games from the post 1945 period.
The Archive now has to prove its future capabilities, a task which can only be accomplished in collaboration with other cultural institutions in the City of Nuremberg, and in co-operation with patrons and sponsors, with representatives from science, research and business. Long term success will depend on intensive networking with the independent games scene and a programme for the public of exhibitions, workshops, competitions and other types of event.
The games phenomenon appeals to EVERYONE, regardless of age, gender, origin or skin colour. "Play more!" - This is the motto the German Games Archive in Nuremberg will use to motivate all walks of society to join in the games.
Currently, the collection of the German Games Archive is still in storage and therefore not accessible to the public.

In order to allow interested future "Co-Players" and partners a first glimpse of the impressive treasures of the German Games Archive in Nuremberg, nuremberg municipal museums will introduce the concept and outline of the new institution in a special exhibition in summer 2010:
Exhibition in City Museum Fembohaus
30 July - 21 November 2010
Further information on this special exhibition will be available on this website soon.
