The Foundation Albrecht Dürer's House (Albrecht-Dürer-Haus-Stiftung e. V.) was established in 1871 in the context of the celebrations of Albrecht Dürer's 400th anniversary. Originally, its main aim was to restore the badly run down house where Dürer had lived to a "dignified state" and make it accessible to the public.
Since 1875, when the foundation moved into the premises as a tenant, it has strived - in co-operation with the City of Nuremberg, the owner of the house - to spread Dürer's posthumous fame.
Since 1971, the foundation's main aim has been collecting documents illustrating Dürer's influence on his successors, and on his posthumous fame. The works of art and artefacts kept in the Graphic Art Collection, as well as the comprehensive specialist library are two examples of this foundations valuable work.

In recent years, the Foundation Albrecht Dürer's House has taken on the task of co-operating on creating a new design for Albrecht Dürer's House which will again focus on Albrecht Dürer, as a person and as an artist, as well as contributing significant financial support to this project.
