In Nuremberg, the tradition of providing works of art from the municipal art collections to furnish all city halls and municipal offices goes back over many centuries.

Since the 1970s, this service has been called "Office Picture Loan". Municipal staff could choose one or several works of art for their offices. For several decades, up to 5,000 works of art have thus been on show in municipal offices.

During the past few years, for conservation reasons and because of a lack of staff, no works of art could be loaned to municipal offices, although "office pictures" on loan could be returned.
